This workshop will consider the reasons for mergers both domestic and cross border, the issues that arose as part of the merger discussion and the early results of the merger.  The two main speakers have both completed major mergers, one of a UK law firm with a US law firm and one of a firm of property advisers with a big four accounting firm.

Outcome:

Delegates will be better able to understand the issues to consider and address when contemplating a merger, know the reasons to proceed or not to proceed with a merger and the practical issues that need to be dealt with both before and after completion of the merger.

The workshop (guided by experienced practitioners and using real examples) will consider:

The implications of the compulsory professional indemnity provisions on law firms including –

- The Solicitors Regulation Authority consultation on reforms
- Possible reductions in availability of cover
-  Cost
-  Liabilities for firms, partners and successor practices
- Implications for partnerships, Limited Liability Partnerships and individual partners 
- Practical issues to consider on dissolution of firms

Outcome:  Delegates will be better able to:

- advise clients on the  practical steps needed to minimise the occurrence and impact of professional indemnity issues in law firms, including those on merger or dissolution
- recognise problem areas where specialist insurance advice may be essential

This workshop (guided by experienced practitioners) considers:

-         The nature of  "crises" and how they can arise in a professional services firm
-         Management practices firms can adopt to minimise  the scope for crises arising
-         Procedures to minimise the impact of  crises on the firm’s various stakeholders (including clients and employees)
-         Where to turn for support when a crisis “breaks”
-         Managing the media (having regard to their needs and methods)

Outcome:  Delegates will be better able to:

-         Advise clients on the  practical steps needed to minimise the occurrence and impact of crises
-         Position their own firms to avoid crises and the potential for negative impact on their  stakeholders
